Humidity Controls   Energy Recovery Ventilation   Air Cleaners & Purifiers

According to the EPA, indoor air health problems are present in 8 out of 10 homes, and indoor air pollution is listed as one of the top five environmental risks to public health. There are two to five times more contaminants contained in indoor air than outdoors.

The removal of contaminants from your home's heating and cooling (HVAC) system should be considered as one component in an overall plan to improve indoor air quality. Cleaning your ducts can flush out pollutants like pollen, mold and pet hair.

When should you have your ductwork cleaned?

  • If mold can be seen inside the duct surface (sheet metal), on the vent registers or other components of your central air conditioning and heating system.

  • If recent home renovation or remodeling has been done the system may have been penetrated with construction debris and dust – especially if ducts were not sealed off while the work was performed.

  • If there has been a recent rodent, squirrel or other animal infestation within the home or ductwork, a duct cleaning should be done after pest removal.

Clean air duct registers with a vaccuum periodically.
  • If after giving the registers a good cleaning with a vacuum that noticeable odor, pet hair, or other debris are being still being released throughout the home.

  • If after cleaning, there is still visible dust floating around the house.

Duct Sealing

A well-designed duct system that is sealed properly can make your home safer, more energy efficient and comfortable. In typical houses, about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts.

Signs that your home has potential duct problems:

  • High summer and winter utility bills
  • Rooms that are difficult to heat and cool
  • Stuffy rooms that never seem to feel comfortable
  • Ducts are located in an attic, crawlspace, or the garage
  • You spot tangled or kinked flexible ducts in your system

Sealing the leaks in your home's ductwork enhances the performance of the HVAC system and improves total indoor air quality. It also helps eliminate comfort problems, like rooms that are too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.

Common Air Leaks in Ductwork - Energy Star

Some common duct problems include:

  • Leaky, torn, and disconnected ducts
  • Poorly sealed registers and grills
  • Leaks at furnace and filter slot
  • Kinks in flexible ductwork restricting airflow

Having your ducts properly sealed and insulated increases efficiency, lowers your energy bills, and can often pay for itself in energy savings. If you’re planning to install new heating and cooling equipment, a well-designed and sealed duct system may allow you to downsize to a smaller, less costly heating and cooling system that will provide better dehumidification.
